You may have seen my other wiki page about the Phases of the Moon, and various other objects in out space. This page is about a scientists living under the control of the Roman Catholic Church. Galileo was the first to discover many things that are still true today.
In the 17th Century Italy people believed the ideas of Aristotle, a greek philosopher who lived 200 years earlier. His ideas were originally banned by the church, until he was suddenly the only scientist they agreed with. Galileo Galilei disproved Aristotle many times, as well as discovering very important information, such as the moon's craters and mountains, the four moons of Jupiter, the forces that act on objects and most importantly, that the earth revolves around the sun.

Galileo worked alone, because the church did not support his work. Galileo was Catholic, and he was a loyal person to the church, he just wanted them to look through his telescope.
